With Help From a Reader, this Humble Bench/Table Finds a New Place
Dear Readers, you spoke, (or commented) and I listened.
Well, one of you spoke about something that was bugging me about this vignette, and I listened. A while back, while I was sharing with you some of the things I was doing to lighten up the living room, I showed you some change and progress with this vignette.
First here is what it looked like when I had a lot of black accenting my living room:
But since then I sold the tall cabinet on the left and moved the bench to the dining room by the front door, and I love it there.
Then in my process of lightening up the living room this was the next vignette I came up with for this space:
I put this little gateleg table here and had the faux bamboo tea table to the left. Parts of this vignette were ok, but something, subconsciously was bugging me about it, and one of my readers commented to me about it… She totally nailed in words what was bugging me about it…
she said: “I love the corner vignette with the tea table, bird cage, clock and prints. The colors are gorgeous and everything complements everything else. It is perfect. Do you not think that, given all that is going on in the corner, the white table right next to it is a little overdoing it??? Looking at the pics, it seems a little disjointed with the white table, pretty as it is, sitting on that same small stretch of wall.”
Basically, she’s saying doesn’t it feel like two different entities… YES! That’s it, the tea table and the gateleg table do seem like two separate entities and don’t relate well to each other.
So, after living with it for a while, here’s what I came up with:
I’m super happy with it now. But I admit, it sort of happened by accident.
As I was cleaning out every room in preparation to start showing I decided to move this old blue shelf out of the sunroom to make more space in there with less clutter. However, this old blue shelf is really special to me, so I wasn’t going to sell it, instead I wanted to find a new spot for it in ‘Our House’.
(fun story: this old blue bench/table used to be my grandma’s. My grandpa was a carpenter and added the inside shelf and legs to heighten it from a bench to a table tall enough for them to use as a workspace on their back porch. I can still see the top covered with newspapers spread out, and my grandma cleaning fish on it!)
Now I love how the blue in the vase on the tall antique twig table correlates to the old blue bench/table. And I love the memories of my grandma doing a simple task like cleaning fresh caught fish, every time I walk by it.
Thanks readers… I am listening!
