Window Treatments in the Master Bedroom, How I Accomplished Form and Function

All of the windows in ‘Our House’ are treated according to what the privacy and light control needs (function) are for each space, as well as treated for the aesthetic quality (form). In most cases it’s difficult to accomplish all those needs with only one treatment per window. Usually, I have a treatment for the privacy and light control, and a separate treatment for the ‘look’.

In the master bedroom, the Hunter Douglas plantation shutters on the windows are on all 3 windows in the bedroom, as well as the window in the master bathroom. They are for the privacy and light control, I love that you can pivot the slats however you want, and unlike some shades meant for privacy that don’t really look all that stylish, these shutters look great.

To add a little style and pull the same dark metal detail onto the shutters that’s on other hardware in the bathroom and bedroom, I installed these small knobs on them, what a difference that little detail makes. (I ordered the knobs from Van Dyke’s, a great resource for hardware!) 

But just the shutters alone with the wood walls and wood ceiling looked like a lot of hard surfaces and needed something to soften it, so I put up the long drapery panels on the windows. 

I got these draperies from Pottery Barn, (they match the duvet cover). The draperies were on clearance and only left in a few stores. I had to shop all over the country (via phone) to find enough. Finally I tracked down 5 panels in a Pottery Barn store in Manhattan. (they shipped them right out to me!)

I actually only needed 4 panels, because I decided that on the large window I’d do one panel on each side, but for the pair of small windows that flank each side of the chest of drawers, I’d only do one panel per window, by mounting the panel on the outside of each window. (make sense?) So this picture above shows the window on the right side of the chest and has the panel hung on the right side of it, the other small window is on the left of the chest and has the panel hung on the far left of it. (I’ll show you a picture of that on the post when I feature that wonderful antique chest of drawers) 

I didn’t think I wanted a drapery on the window in the bathroom,

but I did know I wanted somehow to bring in the same toile fabric into that room, so I bought an extra panel (since they were discontinued and had very limited quantity) and stored it for a while until I figured out how to work it into the bathroom design. (eventually, I came across an antique chair at a sale and had  it recovered in the toile fabric from the extra drapery panel, and it now sits next to the tub in the bathroom.)

Also, if you notice, I mounted the dark colored hardware very high above the window. This creates a graceful tall line framing the window. 

I love the way the windows in the bedroom and bathroom look and how well they function with the shutters, and I love the view out them too. Here is that lovely, lovely ever-changing view we see out our bedroom and bathroom windows:
