Our House: A Little Bit of Bird Watching

I love birds… now.

When I was younger, I remember my mom and dad getting such a kick out of seeing this bird or that, and I have to admit, I didn’t get it.

Our House… A Year in the Life of a River

This post has been a whole year in the making.

Really.

I started it last summer, during the dry season, when the grass was crisply waiting for a drink… and the river, still flowing being spring-fed, yet more shallow than normal for lack of the extra fill of runoff from the rain.DecorateWithaLittleBit.com summer river during a drought

Summer 2012

This is the river at the foot of the meadow down the pasture from ‘Our House’.

It is a class 1 trout stream. You can see how closest to the camera, the bottom of the river is visible, it’s only about a foot or two deep there, but that curve to the far right is a deep spot, between 8-10 feet deep, and the ‘sweet spot’ for catching trout.

Then came Autumn… Click here to read the rest of the story…

Our House: Master Bedroom Eclectic Furniture Finishes

I love a room with a mixture of furniture finishes, painted, distressed, wood grains, all of them. I find that if a room has all the same wood finishes, I get bored to death, and it’s impossible at that point to bring in something different, because it’s the only thing that is different, so it’ll stick out like a sore thumb!

So instead, I constantly mix it up. The key is to figure out how to balance those different finishes within the room. And to balance it with what the room itself has going on.

So for example in our master bedroom, the walls, ceiling, doors and trim are all painted wood. So if all my furniture finishes were painted wood it’d be just as boring to me as those rooms where people have all wood grain finished trim, doors, floors and all their furnishings are wood… (I have friends that have that, and I have a confession to make, when I go to visit them sometimes I get lost imagining painting their trim and some of their furniture!) click here to read the rest of the story…

Someone Else’s House: Bungalow Living Room

Last time we were in this living room, I showed you the fireplace and mantel area that was transformed with paint and fabric. (click here to see that transformation) I also showed you how the saddle is displayed by the fireplace, and the wonderful sign they made from old fence boards featuring a horse theme with parts of a verse from the book of Job. (click here to see more about that)

On the other side of the living room…

Our House: Wet Bar Cabinet Stencil Project

Right in the middle of painting my new wet-bar cabinets, I was contacted by Royal Design Studio to post a little something about their stencils.

Well, perfect timing! I wanted to add a little bit of something to the two cabinet doors, and they offered me to select one of their lovely stencils…
