Our House: Family Room Changes, Starting with Re-Doing Window Treatment
A little bit ago I shared with you, over several posts, how I had ‘lightened up’ the living room on our main level. Well, now it’s the lower level’s turn for some lightening up and neutralizing!
In case you missed it, I started with the hallway that leads to this family room by making this fun faux zinc lettered sign for it.
Now, moving into the family room, I’ll show you how the valance was…
Cute and colorful, but I’m ready for a little more neutral in my life…
For the past several years the family room has been very colorfully decorated with bright cottage colors, but as we’re preparing to sell our house, I’m trying to tone down anything that may appear a little too specialized and open it up for ‘the masses’. Ha!
Part of the family room walls are papered with a yellow background paisley print, it is a very nice paper, and I’m thinking that with everything else now being changed to mostly neutrals, that the wallpaper with just a tiny pop of color on the other side of the family room will be a fun accent.
This window treatment is one of the first changes to the family room, it’s an upholstered board valance above the 8’ sliding door that leads out to the screen porch and beyond to the patio, grill etc.

Toile… What’s Not to Love About it?
Nothing! I absolutely love toile, I have since I remember first seeing it when I was a little girl, and even though it’s been so over-done to some regard the past few years… I still love it.
So what exactly is toile? READ ON…
Our House… Spare Bedroom, Home to the Orioles
A few weeks ago I switched the two spare bedrooms around at ‘Our House’… it suddenly dawned on me that both rooms would benefit by switching the furniture. One room is larger than the other, yet the smaller of the two rooms housed a pair of twin beds leaving the larger room with the queen bed.
When I first started blogging, I was getting my ‘posting legs’ with a series from the West Bedroom… that was where the queen bed used to be… but now that I switched it to the other smaller bedroom, this is what it looks like. Read on…
Little Brick Cottage: Who Knows What Lies Beneath…
Well I know now because, I have been busy with wallpaper removal!!! And I have the bandaids on several of my fingers to prove it. As I was scraping with a wide blade putty knife, I kept scraping my knuckles on the rough plaster wall, ouch.
It was a complete surprise that there was the original beadboard hiding under layers of wallpaper and skimcoat in the dining room. But it’s out now, as the chair-rail height beadboard is now exposed and ready to be prepped for paint. Unfortunately, there was a large area in the NW corner that was Read on…
Little Brick Cottage: More Surprises!
So remember how excited I was to find the old oak plank flooring under the kitchen linoleum? That was a really sweet surprise. Well I found another sweet surprise…
This was the dining room before we did anything:
It had carpet and this floral striped wallpaper. We removed the carpet and pad to find a maple floor in okay condition. For the walls I was thinking that I would just paint over the wallpaper, Read on…
Remember? This is what it was…
Remember? This is what it was…
This is the dining room in ‘Someone Else’s House’. This picture shows the project part way through, they’ve already filled the holes in the walls, painted the woodwork bright white, and prepped the top portion for the vintage wallpaper they will be hanging.
This is what it is… Read on
This is what it was…
Wow, are those walls green. The top has been prepped for wallpaper and the green that’s still showing, is sporting polka dots from the wall patch.
This is from “Someone Else’s House”. Their house is around a hundred years old with plaster walls and huge old trim. This room was their living room, but being adjacent to the kitchen they decided it would function better to change it to the dining room. So they switched around rooms.
The room is nearing the finish, wait til you see it. Vintage wallpaper went up on top, followed by a bright white trim, then on the lower section paint in a pale blue/green hue.
The complete posting and finished ‘after’ pictures are coming, just watch for them.

Feedback Needed
Dec 26
Posted by DecorateWithaLittleBit.com
We started this blog just about a month ago and I would love to get some direct feedback.
I’m excited about a new project I’ll be starting in January, if all goes as planned. So there will optimistically be a lot of blogging about the progress with that. (I hope to reveal the exciting project in a couple of days.)
I have a lot to share with you in the categories ‘Our House’, ‘Crafts’, and ‘DIY’, along with ‘Someone Else’s House’, which will actually be several different people’s houses that are either my friends, family or houses I’ve decorated.
Here is one of my big questions:
Do you prefer if I post continually about 1 project until it’s completed? (basically how I did the posts for The West Bedroom)
Or do you prefer for me to skip around, to keep it fresh? (Jumping from one project to another)
Check out my posts from the past 4 weeks and please give me any tips on my writing style, posts, or subjects you would love to hear about. Let me know what you liked, what you didn’t like and what you would like to see different. This is a really exciting adventure for me and I want it to be both fabulously entertaining and informative for you.
I think anyone, even if you don’t have a WordPress account can comment, but if you run into trouble, please email me directly at: decoratewithalittlebit@gmail.com
One thing I know I have to work on is taking better pictures. It’s definitely a work in progress. Unfortunately, I can’t blame the camera, it’s a nice one. It’s for sure me needing to learn more.
The only way I’m going to know what you want is if you tell me, so let’s hear it! Thank you!
We’re looking forward to the new year and all the possibilities that come with it,
Little Bit
